I was politely invited twice to attend a morning meeting at a Baptist church 20 miles away, and with a litle prodding from an acquaintance who said "You need to get out more," and "You need to be around others more," I went.
I'm not good at these thing, especially churchy things, and I always feel out of place, but I went. There were 15 of us old folks there, and it was very pleasant to chat. An elderly gent sitting at my table showed me how he had used a fabric glue he had ordered off TV to mend a raveling out hem on his blue jeans. He had done a good job, too. He has washed the jeans about 15 times and the hem is secure as ever.
A lady at the table said "Go to Walmart and look on aisle 12, and you'll see a display of "As Seen On TV" products. Well, that was helpful. Then the gent was telling me how he barely knows how to use his computer but he still managed to look up a stock quote on one of his pharmaceutical stocks on his computer and was surprised the company was located in Israel.
This was a wonderful surprise for him, since to Baptists, Israel is as sacred as Mecca is to Muslims.
Found out almost everyone there had a computer, but most had no idea how to use it, and folks were saying "It's just sitting there collecting dust." I think the church would be doing a much needed service to get someone to go to these houses (including mine) and teach everybody how to at least turn it on and off and look things up.
This church has invited the swamp children, kids of people who live in the Pascagoula River nature preserve and swamp area, to come in once a month to eat, and the children love it. This church knows how to get people on the church grounds--cook for 'em. Baptists and southerners like that a lot.
After a nice lunch, we departed and maybe I'll go back sometime, I don't know when.
