Earthquake Down South
Friday week there was an article on the front page of the paper: EARTHQUAKE STRIKES ALABAMA COAST.
What? Several months ago when I wrote a blog about the Gulf oil spill, I facetiously asked "What else can happen to the South?" Don't ever ask that. But earthquake was not on my mind when listing the diasters that have affected us, or could do so.
The article said the epicenter of a minor 3.5 magnitude quake occured at 5:15pm at the mouth of Mobile Bay, about 35 miles southest of Mobile. Residents of Pensacola and as far north as Birmingham said they felt the earthquake. Gee, I live a lot closer to the epicenter than that. I've tried to recall what I was doing at 5:15pm that Friday and can't.
Also, an "earthquake swarm" of nearly 60 small and moderate quakes has plagued Arkansas since February 15, reports the U.S. Geological Survey. I wonder if the Madrid fault is waking up. But I had no idea there was even a fault line off the Alabama coast. Years ago a scientist had predicted a major earthquake down south and I got and kept earthquake insurance for years (my homeowners doesn't cover quake damage, you have to have a separate clause for that.) Mmmm, maybe it's time to renew that quake policy?
