Earthquake Down South

Friday week there was an article on the front page of the paper: EARTHQUAKE STRIKES ALABAMA COAST.
What? Several months ago when I wrote a blog about the Gulf oil spill, I facetiously asked "What else can happen to the South?" Don't ever ask that. But earthquake was not on my mind when listing the diasters that have affected us, or could do so.

The article said the epicenter of a minor 3.5 magnitude quake occured at 5:15pm at the mouth of Mobile Bay, about 35 miles southest of Mobile. Residents of Pensacola and as far north as Birmingham said they felt the earthquake. Gee, I live a lot closer to the epicenter than that. I've tried to recall what I was doing at 5:15pm that Friday and can't.

Also, an "earthquake swarm" of nearly 60 small and moderate quakes has plagued Arkansas since February 15, reports the U.S. Geological Survey. I wonder if the Madrid fault is waking up. But I had no idea there was even a fault line off the Alabama coast. Years ago a scientist had predicted a major earthquake down south and I got and kept earthquake insurance for years (my homeowners doesn't cover quake damage, you have to have a separate clause for that.) Mmmm, maybe it's time to renew that quake policy?

Hi Hawaii! Even a small tremor must be an amazing experience. Not so exciting if it's a big one though!

We have had some small quakes and they were strong enough to make small
cracks in th e house.

Seismic is correct spelling of course. I think

Hi jeri; well I'm astounded! I had no idea seimic activity was so widespread. Wow!

You're right, that's all you all need down there, to have to start worrying about a big crack in the side of your house from an earthquake.

Hi; a crack in the side of the house will match the crack left in the roof by the last hurricane..Just kidding I hope.

I wonder if Pat Robertson said anything about the New Zealanders "deserving" their killer earthquake? I'm just glad I don't live in California anymore. One bad one while I was there is enough.

Hi sol; Oh you know he probably did make that "crack."
It must be awesome to feel the very ground under your feet heaving and trembling--think I'll pass on that one.

It seems ever since the huge Haiti and Peru quakes that there have been lots of quakes all over the world, including the little ones like the one you mention. There have been a number of little ones in Ohio and Indiana, one fairly close recently, but I didn't feel anything either. The earth seems to be more active geologically.

Hi marta; a friend looked up all kinds of earthquake data on her computer and called me, and it's amazing how many faults underlie the U.S. It does seem that the earth is more geologically active lately--I mean imagine quakes in Ohio and Indiana!

Florida is supposed to sink into the sea. I'm holding my breath.
comment by tealstar on Feb 27, 2011 4:37 AM ()
Hi teal; Yep, every time rising sea levels are mentioned, Florida is mentioned in the same breath--wonder if sea level rise or quakes will sink it first? KIDDING!!
well yesterday I contacted my insurance agent and he himself has earthquake coverage, but it's not $12.00 a year anymore--oh no, it's $128.00 a year with a 10% deductible. I'm still thinking on it.
