Cherie and David are a married couple of my acquaintance living in another state who have bought an older house in the Historic District of their city and are renovating it.
They phoned me to say this house has a mother in law apartment with its own private entrance, bathroom, kitchen etc. and asked if I wanted to move in with them. They've asked me that at every place they've ever lived. Good people, hard working people--I've known them since they were children, and for some reason they like me enough to want me around.
Every year, as life gets more difficult, I've given it some passing thought. But I know I've lived alone so long I'm hard to get along with and do better by myself. Still the offer was tempting--until for some reason the talk turned to politics. We always discuss everything else, but no politics.
This time we talked about how the economy had tanked and I mentioned that I had voted for Obama and hoped he would be steadfast in his reforms. Silence from Cherie. Then she said "David and I think the worst thing to ever happen to this country is George Bush leaving office. If only he could have served another term." Whoo Boy! I'll never bring up any remotely political topic with them again, and and of course that was the deal breaker. I couldn't live under the same roof with Bushies.
