Dave Ramsey & Russian Roulette

My daughter in Texas called and said she's had something akin to the flu for 10 days, but after describing her symptoms it sounds like she's had pneumonia. She took some old antibiotics she had and got some more from her sister. I said why didn't you go to the doctor??  Because, friends, although my daughter and her nutty husband have a successful business, drive expensive vehicles, and just bought a house in a neighborhood where doctors and other upper social types live, they do not have health insurance.
For years I have been the voice of reason and doom--telling them YOU HAVE TO HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE. One catastrophic illness can wipe you out financially down to the last penny. They don't pay any attention to me. I told my daughter Dave Ramsey (the financial consultant who's on the radio and now on Fox Business Channel on Direct TV) says not having health insurance is "dumb."
My daughter says "we can't afford the premiums," and since both she and her galoot husband have medical problems, getting some insurer to cover them might be hard to do. But I say sell one of those Escalades and get some insurance!  I also suggested she let King Kong run the store, and she get a job at a company that offers group health insurance plans and get them on that and pay whatever premiums she has to pay. She scoffs "I'm not going to work at Walmart!" Instead, every day they play Russian Roulette, hoping nothing happens.
I'm telling you from a nurses standpoint and as someone who had to go through bloody hell with another adult daughter who had no insurance, that hospitals, doctors, radiology groups, every facet of the medical groups have no compunction about turning a person over to collection agencies etc. to get what's owed them. It was hellish, and I got my daughter on a re-payment plan with every one she owed, and everybody was happy. But medical care is so expensive nowadays, you simply must have insurance coverage.
Maybe Hillary can work on getting universal health coverage. I hope so. Susil

Our health insurance system is badly broken, and universal health care is the only way to fix it.

I hope your daughter lasts long enough to get Medicare. As for Universal Health Care, assuming we get it, it will help people like your daughter, but if she is this casual about medical insurance, she is probably mismanaging her life in other ways too. Please sweet Sue, go with the flow and don't get twisted. There is nothing more you can do. If she loses her home to a catastrophic illness, she can always sleep in her fancy car.

We desperately need universal health care...are there any State programs there?

I couldn't sleep nights without medical insurance! I have a friend in the same situation as your daughter. I worry about her also, but she really is unable to pay premiums. She is looking for a job which will pay medical insurance.
