Waukesha, WI - A Crawford County man who police say burned himself while trying to steal gasoline was charged Thursday in Waukesha County Court with attempted theft and negligrnt handling of burning materials.

According to a criminal complaint, Austin J Heckman decided to siphon gas from a van parked in an apartment complex, but he could not tell if the can was getting full, the complaint said.

He then used a cigarette lighter to check the can, resulting in an explosion that set the gas can on fire, the complaint says.

Police found Heckman in the lot of a nearby retail store, where he told police what had happened the complaint said.
