The potluck went well yesterday evening. There was a good turnout of families. During potluck dinner, they had ABBA music playing. That music dates from my high school days, so I knew those songs, but I don't think the younger parents appreciated that old stuff.
There were only four student performances: Mexican, belly dance, Japanese hat dance, and hip-hop. I thought there were more in previous years, but Dolly assures me that it was about the same. After the students, one of the mothers did a Maori fire dance (outside the gym), which was burning "balls" on chains that she swung around. Dramatic, of course, and demonstration of skillful movements, but not kids.
Of the students, the belly dancing was the best. Seriously, they had the best crowd reaction were they were finished. Kitty did very well. She was, well, fabulous, and lots of people, parents and students told her afterward. Dolly made their costumes. Her partner in this didn't dance as ... skillfully, but did well too. They worked together well and their multiple practice sessions paid off. On the way to the car, she said all the practicing was boring, but was helpful to make their dance better. One comment that people made was that she looked like she was enjoying herself.
The hip-hop troop had five girls dancing. It seemed like they were all supposed to be doing the same moves as a synchronized choreography, but they didn't practice together enough to pull that off.
All the children did a wonderful job with their dances though.
As a kid's performance, the belly dancing was okay, but when women do it, I don't care for it. I know it's not the same as stripping, but it's still women dancing for the entertainment of men. While it would be good for her to have an interest in dancing, if Kitty continues to have an interest in dance, I hope belly dancing is not it.
I posted a picture in the gallery, but removed it.
