Rest in Peace Dave Brubeck

image
The great and iconic jazz pianist Dave Brubeck is dead from heart failure at the age of 91.
This blog recently talked about the subject of the different directions one could take in life. Brubeck started out studying veterinary medicine, but was working his way through school as a pianist in jazz bands. Fortunately for us all, he soon switched his major to music and eventually formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951.
I have plenty of his music and listen to it regularly, my favorites being "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five."
In his six decade long career, he recording many wonderful jazz albums. Said Neil Portnow, the President of The Recording Academy: "his unique time signatures and distinct rhythms were highlights of his innovative style."
RIP

Now I don't have to write a post on this great icon. Thanks. While the aforementioned "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo" were synonymous with Brubeck, for me, the "side B" songs were my favorites, esp. "Kathy's Waltz". I'm playing tapes all day in his honor. I saw his group live at IU back in 61-2 and was forever a fan. And, while I'm not a saxophone liker, Paul Desmond was the greatest!

Sad that he has passed, but he left us much joyful jazz music!

All day, since I saw the news item, Take Five has been in my head.

Unique, recognizable, & incomparable music.

I saw the quartet back in 1961 at a venue in Munich, Germany. I already owned the TAKE FIVE album then (and it is somewhere in a crate full of 33 1/3 vinyls) and have a few of the CDs always handy. Paul Desmond was the best sax ever, and I loved his spontaneous quotations. I think Joe Morello was the best drummer they ever had.

I agree re Desmond and Morello.

Take Five is one of those pieces everyone has heard, but not everyone knows its name or the name of the artist.

Very true. The fate of some Beatles songs these days?
