Cedar Mountain
Yesterday I drove over Cedar Mountain to Cedar City, a 53 mile trip over a very scenic road. In a few weeks, once more snow falls, it will not be a safe drive. In the past, when I had to get over the mountain for a doctor appointment, it was like steering a car on a luge run. Very scary, indeed. Cedar Mountain peaks at 10,000’ and there are more than a few of those yellow signs with the twisted arrows indicating curves ahead. On much of the south side of the highway is a long drop off, sometimes with no guard rail. Off in the distance, if one dares to take one’s eyes off the road, is Zion National Park rising up in huge chunks.
My main mission was to purchase… cat food! I treated myself with a Payday bar and lunch at the Chinese trough. The low point was ringing up over $61 at the gas pump. Coming back over the mountain, I got lucky in that I did not encounter any slow traffic ahead of me. There are precious few places to pass on this curvy mountain road. I did hit some light snow, but not enough to be problematic.
It won’t be long before snow envelops the mountain, so this is likely the last time I make that drive until Spring. The winter snow will build up in sheer walls along both sides of the road from the snow plows and won’t completely melt away until next June sometime. The area is a winter haven for snowmobiles (ugh!) and snowshoers. Brian Head, a well-known ski resort, attracts people from afar.
My mantra will be: if this be winter, can spring be far behind?

That makes winter bearable. A popcorn supply helps too.
