I'm almost afraid to mention how quiet is has been in my ex-husbands camp lately for fear that the chaos might somehow return if I acknowledge it's recent (pleasant) decline.

And of course, it's never really my ex-husband that I have a problem with. He is intelligent enough not to disparage me in front of our children. His wife on the other hand? Well, history reveals that she simply cannot control herself. She spews and spurts angry, negative hurtful things that once said, cannot be undone... or forgotten.

But recently ... it has been "eerily" quiet "over there". Too quiet? Is there such a thing?? My kids have said that their Stepmom hasn't said a nasty thing to them in the past two weeks. Really? WOW! How does that happen?

I have several theories.

She has had recent dental work that inhibits her ability to speak.

She has started eating Wheaties for breakfast.

She is on medication.

Or more likely, and the one I have ultimately decided must be the true reason ... My ex-husband FINALLY told her to 'SHUT UP ALREADY!'

There has been a COMPLETE reverse in Stepmom's attitude towards my children. And although she's most likely incapable of joining the other end of the spectrum where love and support abound, I will gladly accept her indifference and silence around my children any day, over her usual serving of sarcastic negativity.


And so, lately... it's simply been better. Quiet. PEACEFUL.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I am cautiously aware that Stepmom's recent change in behavior is kind of like being on vacation. It's really nice, and we're truly enjoying ourselves... but eventually... it comes to an end.
