People in Ivory Towers

I was unable to attend my cousin's service today, as I no longer trust my driving that far alone.   Holly had prior commitments and could not go with me.
I sent flowers to the nursing home to my aunt and my mother, who room together.  My mother, oddly enough, has bounced back and seems to be doing much better since she got her feeding tube.  She eats a little; but I think having her diet supplemented with the feeding tube has really helped her.  Physically, she can do nothing; but her mental facilities are better than they have been since before her knee surgery, which almost did her in.  Mother is now 87.

It is my aunt, who is 85, who has gone downhill  the quicker of the two. She has had a couple of strokes and it is really hard to understand what she says; she's awfully weak as well.  I just fear the loss of her son could be too much for her.  She has not been told that he committed suicide--only that he passed away.  We all agreed that neither she nor Mother could handle that.
The nursing home is taking both of them to the service by medevac and will have a representative there with them.  This facility where they stay is so good.
When my other brother was also ill with cancer, the nursing home staff voluntarily arranged to have my mother fly to Houston to see him;  a person from the facility went with her; they spent two days and Mother was able to spend a full day with him.   It was the last time she saw him before he passed away.  Social Services paid for their airline tickets, their hotel room,  had a medevac to meet them at the airport; and covered all meals and gratuities.
Social Services also paid for my surviving brother to have a place to stay where he got his meals when he went through chemo. This place took him for treatments if he did not feel well enough to drive on any given day.   Since he had no insurance,  we were able to get him care at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, where his bill was also covered by social services.
The very last place we should cut benefits is to programs such as these.  Let's cut the military budget that gobbles over half the taxes we pay each year, get out of Afghanistan and quit trying to police the world.  It's impossible anyway.  We can't change people's cultural thinking.

And, for heaven's sake, let's NOT fight to eliminate Obamacare if the Supreme Court doesn't strike it down.  And if they vote strictly party lines, they will, as the Republicans hold a 5-4 edge.  We already know that Scolia and Thomas are in the Tea Party's back pocket...they have both attended secret meetings with the Koch brothers that have been documented in the press.

It never would have come to this without the Republicans trying their best to find a way to discredit Obama.   His plan will solve many of the problems I have just discussed.  My brother did not have insurance because he had a pre-existing medical condition.
With Obama's health care plan,  he could have bought coverage.  What people who are griping do not understand is that the requirement that everyone carry insurance or pay a penalty is the ONLY way that insurance companies would agree to insure people with pre-existing conditions and not raise premiums.
Which would these people rather have...insurance that will cover their pre-existing conditions or no insurance AT ALL?  For many, that is what they face.

And Republicans want to eliminate all social services or seriously cut their funds.   Gawd, I hate those people.  They sit up there in their Ivory Tower, making decisions on matters that they know nothing about.  Social Services extends people's lives every day, pays for 99 per cent of the care for our Senior citizens as well as providing assistance for families in times of crisis.

Agree totally and well put. It stuns me is that the race between Romney and the President is close. I am wondering if the great unwashed ever had a clue. They are susceptible to negative ads about Obama because of an underlying racism that Obama's election has brought to the surface. Also, the Republicans pander to their self-perceived victimhood that appeals to them emotionally.

Both of us live in the heart of ignorant conservatism and underscore ignorant. Seniors don't understand the medicare is government insurance. I
hear constantly that Obama care is unconstitutional. I am sure the
justices will not uphold it because they are republican appointees with
few exceptions. Other countries have health care and social services and
there is no reason that we can't also. War is not necessary. The years
we spent in Iraq were not necessary and God knows families have been torn
apart and men died and suffered horrible wounds from that war. We do not
understand the mind set that fueled that war and the guys in Afghanastan
need to come home and resume their lives. Republicans seem to be lacking in compassion.

Compassion--or the lack thereof--is what amazes me most about Republicans. I cannot imagine why middle class people would ever vote for a Republican. They do not represent the values of these people; but they delude them by portraying Obama as a Nazi, a Marxist, a Communist, a socialist, a baby killer, a liar, I could go on and on. They called Roosevelt and Johnson the same names because they both pushed for change to help the people. The point is that they so obscure the facts with all these drivel that people get caught up in the rhetoric and forget what these people really represent and how they will vote on important issues.
It is all ignorance fueled by misdirection. It blows my mind that people cannot see the forest for the trees; but that is exactly what Republicans count on....that they can so divert the people's minds from who they are and what their devious objectives are.

This country's entire for-profit model for health care is driving people into the poor house and bankruptcy, doing nothing for millions who are not eligible or old enough or disabled enough for Medicare, and driving this country's economy downhill fast. On average, I spend 20-25 percent of my monthly income on health care, and there are still health needs that I cannot afford to address. The Affordable Care Act helps this critical issue tremendously, given that Single Payer health care, which is the only true solution, is not politically possible. The Republican's opposition to this is utterly inhumane, as is a great deal of the GOP social agenda. Makes me sick!

It does me also. Can you even begin to imagine getting social security or Medicare passed now, much less a single payer for the nation. People are so stupid. It is not the debt that will bankrupt our children and grandchildren. It is the Republican's agenda to protect the wealthy while throwing the rest of us away. We are not moving forward; we are moving backward in our thinking.

Yes,it is a tough decision.Lot of people do not understand what the Obamacare is all about.
If they continued to vote Republican they are asking for trouble.Yes,these people live in a Ivory Tower have no ill feelings toward this.No insurance then you out of luck. How drastic is that.

The ignorance of the voting public worries me; they listen to Fox News, and think they are being told the truth. Scary.

One of the scariest things I can think of is not being able to do what I want to do physically and still having an active mind! Claustrophobia to the max, I guess. On the bright side, it's good that people are living into their 80s! Even better if they remain healthy!

Same here! I could drive that far, but it would exhaust me; I also just don't like the thought of having car trouble or hitting something in the road that caused me to blow a tire. Those things used to not worry me; but now they do. People are living into their 80's and beyond, some still in excellent health.

What drives me bonkers is that we have seniors who live here with HUD subsidies because they went broke due to health problems and not having coverage--and they vote Republican!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 21, 2012 9:33 AM ()
I know!! How in the world do you get through to these people?? It is just insane that ANYONE living in a government-subsidized facility and on Medicare or Medicaid who went broke paying medical bills would even consider for one instant voting Republican.
