The same was true in their extra-curricular activities. They were never allowed to quit anything halfway through. They finished the year. If they stayed with it, I again expected them to excel. It wasn't always a stated thing--but it was definitely understood.
They now have passed that attitude on to their children. I recently did a post on Blogster entitled "My Karate Kid" in which I mentioned that Big Sissy had taken first in her inaugural karate tournament.

She is on the far left
I was only half joking when I said that I would expect no less, since she was MY granddaughter. She was excited and called to tell me as soon as she got home .
But, you know what! She was just as excited when she pulled her only "B" on her report card up to an "A". She also immediately called with that news, because I had told her that I knew she could do it with just a bit more concentration and effort.
Grandson has always been a straight "A" student.
That's why I always pull for Tiger when he plays. He's a winner--and I like winners! He does not like to be second! He always wants to lead the pack as do I.
That's my attitude! Anything worth doing or working toward is worth giving every ounce of energy one has to reach that goal. I will never settle for being second best, and I will never let my adversary influence nor deter me.
