Even Kiddie Cars Hit by Inflation

I was in Ace Hardware today with my daughter.  We were looking at some of the toys the store is carrying this year.  Among two we noticed were a retro foot pedal fire engine and a retro pink pedal car.  Those of us who were young in the late 40's and early 50's might find one or the other under the tree on Christmas morning if we had been especially good.
Maybe you were one of those good little boys or girls who were lucky like me to have Santa drop off one at your house.

"Look,  Kenna!  I had one of these when I was a little girl!", I said.
Then I looked at the price and almost dropped my teeth.  Nearly $200 dollars each.  THESE ARE PEDAL CARS, NOW MIND YOU.  THEIR ONLY MEANS OF LOCOMOTION IS THE 2 TO 6 YEAR OLD KID INSIDE THEM (the recommended ages according to the manufacturer's tag).
These two, very similar to the ones Ace had, I found on line--their price--$279 each.  And if your kiddie has expensive taste, lusting for a Mercedes, that will set you back a cool $400 plus.
I was too small to know what one cost in or about 1950, but I am guessing no more than $20.   My, how things have changed

I think they're wonderful looking, though, don't you? What kid wouldn't want one, either back then or now? Edie's nephew has the fire engine one. His mother found it at a yard sale...well used, but in great shape...... for $35. A bargain, I'd say.

It looks like they are more for display than kids to play in and get all scratched up. They sure are cute, though.

Whether coaches like to admit it, there are style points in college football. Oklahoma used them to their advantage, and the Sooners might now be in a position to play for the Bowl Championship Series title.

As usual in college football, there could also be controversy. On the strength of Oklahoma's 65-21 demolition of previously unbeaten and second-ranked Texas Tech in prime time, the voters in the USA TODAY coaches poll elevated the Sooners to the No. 2 position.

TOP 25: Latest coaches' poll

OU, fifth last week, picked up four No. 1 votes and moved ahead of No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Texas, which beat the Sooners earlier in the season. The loss sent the Red Raiders tumbling to No. 8 in the poll.

If the Sooners, Longhorns and Red Raiders all win next week and finish in a three-way tie in the Big 12 South, the BCS standings will determine who plays Missouri for the conference title. The coaches' poll is one component of the BCS standings, along with the Harris Interactive poll and an aggregation of six computer formulas. The BCS standing are released roughly between 7 and 7:30 p.m. ET Sunday.
