Growing Older ... .

Even if you are not a Christian, I think you'll enjoy this little prayer!
Lord, you know better than I know myself that I am growing older, and will "someday" be old!
Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and every occasion.
Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody's affairs.
Make me thoughtful, but not moody, helpful but not bossy.  With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all--but you know, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.
Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point.
Seal my lips on my many aches and pains.  They are increasing, and my love of rehashing them is becoming sweeter as  the years go by.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet;  I do not want to be a saint--some of them are so hard to live with--but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil.
Help me to extract all possible fun out of life.  There are so many amusing things around us, and I don't want to miss any of them.
Amen,
Passionist Missionaries

Let me add another one. Don't brag about the accomplishments of your
children. My friend whose children graduated Harvard Law and are now
extremely wealthy bores us all to death.

That is a tough one for all of us, isn't it? Especially when it comes to our grandchildren.

Oh my, I'm up to my eyeballs in election night reporting....
You finished packing yet? Or are you all moved into your new happy home?
comment by marta on Nov 2, 2010 6:53 PM ()
I'm all moved into my new place. Have been here about three weeks now.

Hi! Marta! How are you doing?

There are times in an older life when telling it like it is, is a blessing and you can do it because, as Trout says, what people think doesn't matter. I am not advocating being unkind, but if one is not forthright at the right moment, one gets run over.

There are times when I have to set my children straight when they get a little too condescending. As for people who are not family members, as I told one person who thought she could walk over me: "I've chewed up and spit out people a whole lot smarter than you!" People soon learn I am a gentle person with the demeanor of a tiger when needed.

It was a big day in my life when I realized I didn't care if people thought I was clever or charming or smart or fashionable.

No one has ever accused me of being fawning, a sycophant, or a lackey. I have always been my own person, walking to the beat of my own drum. As I told Bailey, there is nothing wrong with being high maintenance. High maintenance people are also intelligent, creative, and possess natural leadership abilities.

I think it's ok to complain about some aches and pains though.

You are too young enough to be able to do that.

I'm still OK (although I credit 12 Steps). Thanx
