The Friday Report from Dallas

It's a beautiful Spring day in Big D and opening day at Ranger Park.  The Dallas Morning News reported this morning that the average cost of a ticket for the game with the White Sox is $270.  When did "America's Pastime" become the pastime of the 1 per cent?  Incidentally, the paper reported that the game is a sell-out!

Today on Good Morning, Texas, the hostess did a segment on scam artists who pry on people following tragedies such as the tornadoes that hit Dallas this past week, reminding people to beware of "fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants" contractors.  She had a guest who hired two of these such characters.  One roofed the wrong house, and the second went to prison!  Some people can't win for losing!

It's Good Friday, which represents the day that Christ was crucified.  I have always wondered why it is called "GOOD Friday."  Seems to me a more appropriate sobriquet would be "BLACK" Friday.  Instead, we use that term for the day after Thanksgiving, the biggest shopping day of the year.  Merchandisers, I'm sure, look upon that as "Good" Friday. Makes no sense to me.

George Stephanoupolos' wife guest hosted this morning on GMA while Robin Roberts took a long Easter weekend.  She is a riot!  She had George, week-long guest hostess, Katie Couric, and the rest of the people in stitches the whole time.  By the way, the early morning show format really is Katie's genre.  GMA should try its best to get her to a long-term contract.  I'm betting they could quickly overtake Today if they did.

Something I read this morning:

Failure of April, 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference:  An event notable for intransigence on the part of the United States and China and for public indifference following the disclosure that Tiger Woods had sex with women to whom he was not married.  Not even close, though it's nice to see golf and the people who love it doing even more to f..... up the environment.

Similarly, see the June, 2009, failure of the Iranian "Green Revolution" after Michael Jackson died and suddenly no one gave a s....t.

That's it for this Friday From Dallas...Look for my report next Friday on the life of this liberal in the heart of conservatism.

Loud and clear, my friend.

They would go broke if they waited for me to buy over priced tickets. I am
fed up with the values that pay entertainers, movie stars and athletes
and celebrities tons of money while teachers still start out at 32,000. a
year after 5 years of hard labor getting a masters degree. Sorry, it is just an aspect of modern culture that irritates me.

That makes two of us, Jeri. Such a ridiculous system of values we have in this country.

You certainly covered all the bases! (pun intended) All that jocularity on the morning shows is the main reason I don't watch them. Too cheesy, or cheery, or something. And hurray for your liberalism!

Always and forever. My dad drilled it into my head long ago that if a person wants hard times, all he has to do is vote for a Republican

Oh PUHLEEZE--IF I see ONE more story about the new Marlin stadium with fish tanks, retractable roof, swimming pool, oysters on the half shell, etc., plus a headache finding a place to park or getting to and from the stadium I will scream loud enough for you to hear me in Dallas!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 6, 2012 2:40 PM ()

I think opening day tickets, being mostly sell-outs, usually get the scalpers going. Those prices are probably what they are trying to get outside the gates. Baseball tickets are no way near that high.
comment by hobbie on Apr 6, 2012 8:46 AM ()
Nope! That was the actual average cost. The article did mention that Dallas has the highest priced tickets in the nation. But then, Dallas is one of the ten richest cities in the nation. I just don't happen to be one of those lucky ones.!!!@

"...in the heart of conservatism." Since when did it get a heat?

Excellent point!!!!

The sports teams have gotten into a bad pattern of over-paying the players and ticket prices have sky-rocketed to keep up. Anyone who has cable or satellite TV also pays more because the networks have to pay more to air the games and that gets passed along to the consumer.

It is a shame when sports figures and entertainers in general are paid the kind of figures that force the public to pay exorbitant prices to enjoy watching them. That's why I stick to college sports.
