The Friday Report from Dallas on Monday

I'm back with an update.  The big news here is that Holly and Bevan got their first look at their home after their tenants moved out.  They were sick, to say the least.
The amount of work they are going to have to do before they can move back in is just overwhelming.  Their kitchen cabinets have to be completely redone; the tile in three of the four bathrooms is totally ruined;  the wiring is jerked loose and broken on two of their ceiling fans; the return air vents are so caked with dust that the entire duct system will have to be cleaned; some of their wood on their wood flooring will have to be replaced; the French doors going into the office are so scratched from dogs jumping on them that they will have to be replaced; the carpet is so filthy that Holly refuses to walk on it without shoes; and that is just what she could remember off the top of her head. She said it's so bad that it's hard to know what to tackle first.

They had planned to repaint and put new carpet down anyway; but this is way beyond what they had planned to spend.  They cancelled a new dining room set and hutch they had planned to buy because now they need that money just to get their house liveable again.
They have to be out of this house by July 1.  They will doing some of this, I am sure,  after they move in.  The bathrooms, the carpet, painting  and the duct work are top priority right now.  Some of the painting they will hire done; some they will do themselves.  Their entry way requires scaffolding because it is so high, so they have hired professional painters to do it and the hallway.

Kenzie has her first swim meet tonight at 7 p.m.  I may be taking her as they are overwhelmed with work.  Holly took the day off because they now have to shop for tile for the three bathrooms.
Thankfully, Bevan's youngest brother is an independent contractor.  He is going to do the tile for them, hang their new doors, and fix their hardwood floors.   However, he lives in Tulsa and will have to find a time to come down to do it.
That's the bad news.  Here's the good news!  My OU Sooner women are playing tonight at 7 p.m. (CDT) in the first of a best of three finals of the Women's College Softball World Series.  They will be taking on Alabama.  Should be fun to watch.
Also, the Thunder and the Spurs meet tonight in San Antonio for Game Five to determine the western conference champion in the NBA.  They are currently tied at 2-2.  I'll have to switch back and forth between the OU women and the OKC Thunder game.
I'll be back Friday (or shortly thereafter) with another "Friday Report" for you.

Hopefully the tenants paid a security deposit that will help offset some of the expenses. Back in the days when I rented, I felt an obligation to keep my rental cleaner than my own home because it did not belong to me. I am always amazed how destructive people can be when it is not their property.

Yes, and they did not get a penny back nor did they ask for it.

Yes, I'm late in reading this. Sorry. The house sounds awful. Ugh. Better news for today's "Friday report"?

It was a mess.

I feel their pain. Until I gave my children each a house, I had renters. It
was a nightmare. It was a nightmare undoing the damage also. One family
sneaked in two extra kids and they were very destructive!.

It is just so hard to believe the filth in which some people will live, and these people seemed so nice. Blows my mind.

So sorry about the renter experience. The one house I have has been blessed with excellent renters who have always paid early and left the house in good condition. I shudder to think how your children felt when they saw the damages, especially if it used to be their home.

Yes, they built it and lived in it for five years. When they moved to Illinois, they couldn't sell it and get back what they had in it, so they were forced to lease it. The people living there seemed so nice and the few times they stepped inside it, it looked clean. But, boy were they fooled!

I agree with the anti-renters. I didn't stay in the motel business for long--just can't deal with people on my property!

It is amazing how destructive they can be.

And that's why the life of a landlord ain't easy--go back to Oklahoma--the news was better from there!

I would never rent a house on long-term lease to someone who had pets or is a smoker. Of course they all lie about whether they smoke, pretend that smoking out on the porch or in the back yard doesn't count, but then they sneak and smoke in the bathroom anyway. I actually evicted someone over smoking once because it was in the lease, and they had broken it.

There are deep dog scratches on my front door right now, and scratched up wall paper, caused not by renters, but by visiting dogs who were here for just a few hours. I love dogs, but they need to stay home.

Holly and Bevan have two dogs, but they are not scratchers. However, Kenna's little dog was, and he has done some damage to the wordwork in her house. These people didn't smoke; but they couldn't have done much more damage if they had.
