Two Very Different Attitudes

If you watch these two videos of these royal couples exchanging their wedding vows, I think you will quickly see why I said I was disappointed that William and Kate didn't seem to really be enjoying their moment in time.

I thought the minister rushed William and Kate also.

I wondered if the Queen Mother had said something to them. It could have just been marriage jitters, but it actually appeared as if they were trying NOT to smile. Who knows!

There, at the altar, is probably where the real significance of the moment and the act suddenly make your knees go weak and your bladder capacity is topped. I don't blame them for being stiff and mumbling.

Well, they made it through it without a misstep, which was probably foremost on the mind. Prince William kept swallowing and Kate kept wiping her lips with her tongue. They were obviously VERY nervous.

Those poor kids were trying desperately to NOT smile. I wonder what the queen threatened them with? In contrast, the other wedding seemed much more warm and "close". Cool post!

Both of them wanted to smile, but they kept suppressing it. I just would have loved to have seen them relax as Victoria and Daniel did at their wedding and embrace the moment and their vows.

I thought both William and Kate mumbled their vows. I'm not drawing any conclusions from this. It is an intense moment, watched by millions. I didn't even know the other wedding was going on -- it was a lot less publicized and fewer cared. Public exhibitions of emotion isn't a British upper class trait.

Actually, Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel's wedding in Sweden was a bigger event. It was an official state wedding, since she is the heir to the throne watched throughout Europe. Both CNN and NBC applied to Swedish television to broadcast it live, but the powers that be in Sweden would only allow them to do a 48-hour tape delay, so the made the decision not to broadcast it at all under those circumstances. Too bad. It was beautiful and they allowed everything to be filmed, including the wedding banquet, cutting the cake, and their first dance. Through it all, they radiated their happiness. Poor William and Kate, so constricted by what "people might think" if they dared to smile. Too bad.

Both lovely, but William and Kate were so stiff. Several times they repressed the desire to smile. Too bad.

You're really hung up on this royal stuff aren't you? Not that there is anything wrong with that!

As an English major in college, one has to have a working knowledge of the history of royalty to appreciate the literature. I've just made it a lifelong pasttime to stay current on the royal houses of the various countries. It is a good thing this current generation is all marrying commoners, because these families have intermarried so many times that it was getting seriously dangerous. There was not a single royal at that wedding who was not related.
