It is What it Is

A hotel employee shovels snow from a street in front of a hotel housing news media after a storm front moved through Dallas, Texas, February 1, 2011. Super Bowl XLV is scheduled for February 6 at Cowboys Stadium in nearby Arlington, Texas.

The Dallas Steering Committee for Super Bowl XLV are collectively ringing their hands today.  The bad weather has forced cancellation of several social and charitable events already.

In addition, with bad weather forecast all across the midsection of the country,  many who might be driving OR flying will have to delay their plans. That translates into millions of lost revenue dollars for DFW hotels, restaurants, and clubs.

The buses did manage to get the two teams and the reporters who arrived ahead of the storm to Cowboy Stadium for Media Day.

However, alternative indoor practice locations had to be found for the two teams because of the extreme cold. (The wind chill is about 0.)

As you can see from the picture above, the DFW area does not have THAT much snow.  We first got freezing rain, then sleet, than a light sprinkling of snow. That makes for some VERY slick roads that are not thawing much and will definitely refreeze tonight if they did thaw.

However, it doesn't take a lot to paralyze this area because of its complicated infrastructure.  DFW has tons of "mixmasters" where major interstate highways or toll roads intersect. These "mixmasters" often have several levels of highways crisscrossing over one another.
The one above happens to be the cloverleaf where I-75 and I-235 intersect.  When the temperature drops below freezing and stays there, these elevated bridges freeze, making them extremely dangerous.
Although Dallas is building in phases a mass transit system, the city is still primarily a commuter city.  Most people drive from the suburbs to their workplace every day.
When an ice and snow storm hits, it just paralyzes this metropolitan area.  Schools and businesses are closed today all over the area.
Truckers, who foolishly try to go through, are jackknifed everywhere.  When they start up an incline, the trailer starts sliding and soon is at a 90 degree angle with the truck pulling it.
That then blocks usually two lanes, making it impossible for those who HAVE to drive to get where they need to be.

Anyway, it is what it is, and I know that just a little north in Oklahoma it is much worse.  So, I'll be thankful for not having a blizzard as much of the country is now getting or about to get.

I saw news footage of the Dallas storm and ice. Yikes! The snow has finally stopped falling in Northwest Ohio, leaving us with about a foot of snow and drifts everywhere. We'll be digging out for days. However, our resident groundhog predicted an early spring today! Now that's good news!

We had a horrible blizzard here yesterday and there are 4 foot snow drifts
but I don't think we had freezing rain...just sleet for a short period and
then the snow.

I know. I spoke with Kenna twice yesterday and saw some of it on the weather channel. So glad you didn't lose power. I hope others were as lucky.

I used to travel to Fort Worth for the company years ago -- they had a convoluted highway mixmaster like the ones in the photos here. I've never seen anything uglier.

There are a bunch of them in the DFW area now. You can imagine how dangerous these are when we get freezing rain.

I remember watching all those regular season games games played in ice blasty Green Bay, this should be par for the course for the players, but a strain on the fans to get to the game.

Roger Staubach, who lives in Dallas and is the chairman of the Super Bowl Steering Committee, said he was putting in prayers to Tom Landry and his Mama in Heaven to do all they could on behalf of Dallas. Actually, by Thursday the weather is supposed to be above freezing and Super Bowl Sunday is supposed to be in the 50's. The fans will come; they just may not come as soon as they might have if this storm hadn't come through. I remember those Green Bay days too. Cowboy Stadium has a retractable roof. I don't know if it will be open or closed on Sunday. I guess we will know Sunday.

we will or have been getting snowed today, with the worst tomorrow.
I am sure that the fans will get there to the Super Bowl.
Should be interesting to see how this fared out.
In the meantime,back to shoveling.

Joan, HE doesn't do the shoveling--his 'houseboy' Michael does!

I should never complain, and I'm really not. Just stating the obvious. Be careful with that shoveling. Take regular breaks. Lots of heart attacks from people who overdo it shoveling.
