It was just after lunch that I decided to lay down and rest. Ninety mgs of Haldol every day tends to make one sleepy(if not comatose).
I usually sleep on my stomach and this day was no different.
Without warning a large woman jumped on my back and attempted to suffocate me. She pinned me with her weight and pushed my face into the pillow. This was not the first time someone had cut off my oxygen, and I feared dying like that.
Fighting panic, I pulled together all my might and was able to throw her off balance, (adrenaline no doubt).
I quickly got up and ran into the day area where the nurses station was located.
I tried to report my near death to the nurse when I heard a monstrous scream trailing toward me. I had just enough time to raise my left arm up and protect my head from the chair she was wielding. It hit me hard but the pain took a few more minutes.
She then dropped the chair to the floor, went over to a table and sat like nothing had ever happened. But not before she succeeded in breaking my finger and frightening me to the point where “real†sleep eluded me for years to come.
I told the Staff my finger was broken but their disbelief left me days without treatment. Not getting medical treatment when needed was common. And believe me when I tell you sometimes it did result in death.
