At what age does one become able to communicate an ache or pain? Would you feel comfortable in saying that a woman who spoke two languages could adequately report an ailment?
There are two woman who suffered at the hands of the State Hospital that deserve thought. Thought...how useless a word when it can do nothing for them now.
Ms. A, was a petite woman who took pride in her appearance. Her silver hair was perfectly styled....everyday. Every night she polished her shoes a flawless white while watching TV. I never knew why she was there, either she hid her problem well, or I was just oblivious. She spoke two languages, held degrees, and could no doubt impress many with her knowledge base. Why, why, why then would no one take her seriously when she told them she found a lump in her breast! For at least a year she told them she needed a mammogram. For one year her words fell on deaf ears. For one year her lump grew freely.
She lost her breast but it was not enough to save her life.
Can someone help me here? Most people who can communicate, on any level, can tell you when something is physically wrong. So why do doctors think all mentally ill individuals have lost this basic ability?
Ms. B, was a retired nurse. She fell one night in the bathroom. She screamed in agony, calling for help. The lazy bitch staffer made her wait...and wait..and wait for assistance. Ms.B told the staffer she broke her leg, and pleaded for medical help. Bitch staffer one called for bitch staffer two and they both demanded for her to get up and go to bed. Crying that she could not....they pulled her up and roughly "helped" her to bed. All night she lay in that been, crying, asking for the doctor.
The next day she was hospitalized with her leg broken in two places.
I continue my struggle to get decent medical care. When a Dr. reads "psych patient" it's over for me. Whatever I say after that point is not only met with disbelief, but annoyance as well. It does not matter how articulate, well dressed or polite I am.
Thoughts.......to bad they didn't mean more.
