Evolution brought us to the peak of our morality through shock. Shock brought moral and social injustice to our consciousness so that it could be dealt with.
The same evolution has pushed the limit of what shocks us to a very dangerous level.

I do not feel shock, nor will any act man can concoct amaze me in that way. I honestly can't remember when I last felt it. Somewhere along the line it must have become confused with acceptance.

"Look at my new shoes" she said rocking from heel to toe on them. Her voice was raspy and spoken through a toothless smile.
What are they, Cinderella shoes? I asked.

She was in her late forties and someone bought her Cinderella shoes? Man, that's messed up. I almost felt sorry for her until she started rubbing against me. "Dang, woman you smell! Go take a shower before I puke" my voice much louder than it needed to be.
"I can't, they won't let me." she whined.
I looked at her.....I mean really looked at her for the first time. She was a very short woman, under five feet. Her ebony hair was layered with grease that framed a face covered in bumps. Even her nubby fingers displayed these bumps over equally unappealing lumpy flesh. She looked much older than her years, but always dressed as a child. Everything, less the new shoes, smelled foul and sported week old food stains.
"Man, this just ain't right!" I was getting louder on purpose now. "Why does she have to go around stinking like shit"...I was building steam, getting closer to the staff station. "Look at her will ya? Man, why do I have to look at that?" I said pointing at her.
I was loud...and I had everyones attention. "Man, I bet she can't stand to smell herself and that's bad!"
"MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS" came over the speaker. I guess they thought the speaker would trump my volume.

Then the coolest thing happened. It was beautiful. Everyone started yelling. "Let her take a shower" and booing. It was music to my ears. This group of crazy women united, if only for a minute, to get this woman a shower. Our motives were selfish, but that took nothing away from the moment for me.

In one half hours time a very clean, smiling lady, appeared.
It was all good.

I fell asleep basking in the days triumph. I don't know what time it was when something woke me. Something... no someone was staring at me in the dark. It was so intense that even from deep sleep it was felt. "What...what's going on?" I tried to focus in on the giggle sound. "Who......what are you doing?"
Her small bumpy frame looked even freakier in the dark, standing just a foot away.
"I'm just masturbating to your face" she giggled.

That is when it hit me, nothing shocks me anymore.
