Am re-reading A New Earth, but this time, highlighting stuff. I was going to tune in to the Monday night webcasts, but we were having internet problems.
If you Google Eckhart Tolle, several links come up where one can listen to some of his lecture. Somehow, listening to his voice has helped me absorb his writing better.
He talks about "awareness" as something we must intentionally work towards, thus making us "mindful" of what we think and say.
He also talks about the ego-istic self, which pervades our thinking. If our identity is wrapped up in material possessions and image, then it is egoistic. The egoic self tends to go through life "unconsciously", making devisive decisions concerning others and the planet.
To the extent that you detach yourself from material possessions and image, you gain some level of consciousness and are able to live life more intentionally, carefully.
It's interesting reading.
