Time Flies

Hard to believe that I've been unemployed for the last 4 mos.

My friend who works in HR @ Toyota said it would take anywhere from 3-6 mos before I landed a job - but that's how it's been the past 10 or so years.

My goal is to stay within a 5 mile radius from home, which may be too idealistic here in L.A.

I'm going outside the boundary by considering jobs in Culver City and the Westside, but then again, it's a job and there's a substantial school loan to pay off.

Gas is $4 for regular around here and climbing. This is causing lots of people to think twice about commuting anywhere.

So in the meantime, filling out applications and sending resumes continues. When I'm not doing job-related work, my hands keep busy building the inventory for Etsy. Have you visited Etsy yet?

Emphasize where you went to design school. The Art Center College is one of the three top schools in the world. That means much to an employer.

The big thing about interviews is to not be intimidated. Be forward. Be impressive in your dress/costume, but concentrate on eye-to-eye contact. Have ready answers. Never be at a loss for an answer. When they ask what you expect to be paid, never say "scale" or "whatever." Always reply that you have a large college loan that needs to be paid off and you are worth more than a twenty-two year old just out of school because of your life experience and your history of successful employment.

Luv ya!

I bided (bid?) my time making things to show in my portfolio. At times, most of the things in my book were merely my designs, and not finished pieces. I liked to show really well-done and crafty comps instead of finished printed things. Now with the advent of the computer age we show the comps as PDFs and no longer require dummy designs, so things have changed. If I had a portfolio anymore, it would all be digital on CD or DVD, with a backup viewable on a website.

Just keep working and expanding your talent. Make some package designs. Make some killer ads. They don't have to be for real clients. Call them "exploratory designs."

I'm sure with your design skills you have an absolutely crackerjack resume. Hope it doesn't take much longer.
