So tonight, we began our 3rd song. Very complex. My brain must remember the new beat, my body must coordinate.
Others were struggling as much as I was in the coordination dept. When you hear/see a song for the first time, it's intimidating. You wonder whether you have the capability to pull this off.
I have a deep respect for drummers. First, one has to have good ears and timing. Coordination is key. The ability to remember rudiments and syncopation, as well as physically perform the eye-hand movement - requires some kind of wherewithal that challenges one's inclination toward creating a sound that becomes music.
Not everyone has rhythm. Not everyone has coordination. Not everyone has the physicality/stamina required for endurance through a song that goes on for 10 minutes!
So, here I am/we are - daring to learn yet another song that is well, difficult.
At the end of class, we think we got it. The basis for any of the songs we're learning is one thing, and then there is - improvisation. OMG!
This number, by far, is the most physical, in terms of the way one has to position oneself, rocking sideways left and right from bent to straight leg lunges and arms raised right to left to right again, all the while hitting the drum with left, then right and right again, emphatically . . . have I lost you yet?
