Anniversaire

@ this time last year, packing mania was fevered by a deadline to be out of the loft by mid-January

...this meant sorting things into keepers or leavers -

brutally saying bye to nostalgia, even luxury.

Some call it spring cleaning.

However, when one moves, a behavior occurs that sometimes defies explanation.

Sorting. Keeping stuff given to you by someone you have an affection for and ridding stuff by . . . (fill in the blank).

Ever sensitive to surroundings, if it's zen-like, I can think.

Creating tranquillity requires a certain kind of spatial analyses that calls upon other sensibilities...

maybe tempered by quality,

the "eye" carefully selects that which will end up in the living space . . .

either waiting to be let go or kept.

We discarded scads of "stuff" when we last moved, but we still have "stuff" that we never should have kept. It sits gathering dust exactly where we placed it when we arrived with it. Maybe in this spring's cleaning...

Moving is cathartic. It forces one to re-evaluate just what he is willing to box and cart to the new location as opposed to that which he can live without that he previously thought he could NOT stand to let go. I find I am not nearly so attached to some object as I previously thought when I start evaluating the time and energy it requires to move it.
