Today was the last day of work I have before my vacation kicks off. I had planned to spend the 4.5 hours working away to get things done so I would be all caught up. For the most part, I got everything I planned to do done. There was one other thing I was hoping to do.
The last hour was totally crazy. It seems that a lot of high schoolers had homework they needed to get a start on over winter break and most of them didn't seem to do it. They were all in hoping to get last minute resources to finish there homework.
I am usually able to manage helping a few people at the same time, but I had to get one of the pages come over and help with the basic stuff. The trouble was the assignments were pretty big: literature papers, science fair, and history day assignments. They are the kind that mean at least 20 minutes of intense help as we dig through resources to make sure they have what they need.
Since we run a skeleton crew on Sundays, that means I am alone on the Reference Desk with no other librarians to call in to help. I got through it, and they all seemed to leave with what they needed.
It did make the day fly by, which is great! I love it when it is busy. It is harder on the patron because they have to wait, particularly since most patrons come to the library, squeezing it in between other errands so they are in a rush.
I can't tell you how much I love my job!
