Iowa Floods

Something to think about.

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

I received this in an email from a friend. To tell you the truth, I had not even thought about this. These are interesting questions don't you think? Good job Iowa, I'm as proud of you as I was ashamed of the people in N.O.

You're right, bro. There is something to be said for folks that take their problems on and take responsibility for themselves! That's how I was brought up, and, living in a rural area like I do, that is my outlook on life too.
However, what I was referring to in my previous comment was that, while the people of Iowa and other midwest states are laying their own sandbags down, government dollars are already flowing to the area. In New Orleans, it took weeks.

These are interesting questions.
But, you know what? A large portion of New Orleans is STILL in ruins. I'll bet you that the Federal Relief money will reach Iowa a lot sooner, and that the damage will be cleaned quicker.

Because the midwest has a "we take care of our own" belief. I was in St. Louis in '93 during the last big flood, and EVERYONE was out sandbagging, and trying to do what we could to help people we didn't even know. That's just what we did. Not because it was televised, not because there was a huge outcry. We did it because it was our home too and we would expect our neighbors to do the same for us if we were on the water. I imagine it's the same thing going on now in Iowa. People survive adversity if they believe that they can and that their community is there for the to help when needed.
