A Minority Of One

Politics & Legal > Getting it Right ...

Getting it Right ...

My solution to the pain of politics?

1. Limit ALL national offices to four-year terms, one term per office-holder. This includes, the President, Senators and Congresspersons. No re-election to the same office. Ever.

2. Hold ALL national elections in the same year. Eliminate mid-term elections. Everyone runs for office in the same time frame. This would save local election boards tons of cash.

3. After his or her four-year-term is over, no national ex-office holder may work in the lobbying industry for ten years.

ARGUMENTS FOR:
1. Saves money.
2. Eliminates graft, corruption and cronyism.
3. Once an office holder is elected his or her primary focus becomes getting re-elected. That will not happen!

ARGUMENT AGAINST (and counterpoint):
1. "But it will hurt really 'talented' people from serving."
(We haven't had a 'talented' politician or office holder since November 22, 1963. Forget it.)
2. "But it would hurt the advertising industry!"
(I rest my case.)

This would clean up a lot of dirty politics. I especially like the part
about a ten year wait on lobbyists but would hope for a forever limit.

You go, Jondue. I wholeheartly agree. Roosevelt is the reason they limit Presidents to 2 terms. Now, let's talk about Supreme Court Justices and term limits. That should NOT be a lifetime appointment!!!!!!!

The only thing I would add is to limit 'campaigning' to 6 weeks as the English do!!!

I do hate politics- especially dirty politics. I can't believe the hateful, anti- Obama and anti-Democrat stuff that I see in emails.

Interesting and not unreasonable suggestions. I am however not sure if we should limit a truly effective president to 4 yers. May a president's term should be 8 years and then done.
