Tom Wolfel quarter-sawn white oak frame (arts & crafts style)
Tom Wolfel is the best art related wood craftsman I have ever encountered. We have become good friends and are doing joint ventures. I met him over a week ago halfway to his shop in Columbus and gave him a couple canvases. He is framing them and we are going to show them for sale, in Columbus and Tiffin, and will set our prices and split the revenues. His frames are not cheap!
Tom designs several styles of frames, all made with quarter-sawn white oak. Quarter-sawn hardwood is special because it utilizes the design of the wood's grain. Instead of ripping logs the length of the timber in parallel, the wood is cut in quarters, then lapped on the saws so that the grain is visible from the end. It is more expensive wood because of the labor it takes to keep turning the logs with every cut.
The painting/frame has not yet been priced.
(PS: I am also going to do a makeover for Tom's web site.)
