Belly Putter Rule Change ...

The governing bodies of the sport of golf, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal and Ancient (in Scotland) have agreed to change the rules so that long putters and belly putters can be used- so long as the golfer does not "anchor the putter" at anytime during the act of putting, once the golfer has taken his or her stance over the ball.

This means that golfers will not have to hang up their long or belly putters. Their incredibly expensive investments can still be used. But, to avoid penalties they will have to be used without touching any parts of the body except the hands.

WHEW!

Long ago I spent over $250 at a golf shop for my MacGregor Tommy Grace belly putter, so I did not make a stupid equipment purchase after all...
Or did I?

I tried it out several times, even practiced most of several whole days, and still use my old short Carbite mallet putter!

Golf is a strange collection of players who are good, players who aren't and stuffed suits who sit in offices and tweak the rules of the game.

But, at least it has rules.

The manufacturers will make out. They will sell regular length putters like crazy, but the retail golf suppliers will have lots of long-shaft inventory that they can't sell. I have about give putters, so I'm OK. I've been regularly using my Carbite mallet anyway. What is disturbing and upsetting is that so many young golfers, school-age and college age, have been using the long shafts since they took up the sport. I hear it is a majority of golfers under age 21.

Tried it. Decided it wasn't the putter style, but the puttee. While I'm serious about the game, I don't take the game seriously. We'll see how this all turns out.

saw in the paper that they were meeting to decide whether to ban these long putters from 2016 , evidently had a change of heart and just changed the rule

Bowling has a lot of rules, too, but I don't think they are as picky about equipment - there is no limit on the number of balls that can be brought to the game; the average is 4 to 8. I suppose if someone comes out with an remote control ball, it'd be banned.

Does a belly putter have any practical use if it can't be "anchored" in the putter's belly???

Not really.

I could never get into the long putters. But if as you say the long putters can no longer be anchored against your body and then swung with the hands, then that makes them very difficult to use, I would think....

When they ban your style, that's too much. Stick to your guns.

Golf has many levels. Most players (except born cheaters) play by the rules... to a point. Many, including me, have an illegal club in the bag. I have two. They are 1. a two-sided chipping club for left or right-hand use, and 2. at least one of my super Wedgewood irons. The rules say no more than 14 clubs, which I abide by, but I have played with guys who have 15, 16 or 17 clubs in their bag... Just so they keep accurate scores. I don't complain.

Golf talk is alien to me, but I appreciate your enthusiasm. Anything having to do with a belly, I'm in.

I'm waiting for when they ban brown and white Oxford shoes before I hang up my clubs and quit the game.
