The governing bodies of the sport of golf, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal and Ancient (in Scotland) have agreed to change the rules so that long putters and belly putters can be used- so long as the golfer does not "anchor the putter" at anytime during the act of putting, once the golfer has taken his or her stance over the ball.
This means that golfers will not have to hang up their long or belly putters. Their incredibly expensive investments can still be used. But, to avoid penalties they will have to be used without touching any parts of the body except the hands.
WHEW!
Long ago I spent over $250 at a golf shop for my MacGregor Tommy Grace belly putter, so I did not make a stupid equipment purchase after all...
Or did I?
I tried it out several times, even practiced most of several whole days, and still use my old short Carbite mallet putter!
Golf is a strange collection of players who are good, players who aren't and stuffed suits who sit in offices and tweak the rules of the game.
But, at least it has rules.
