I didn't start drinking until I was 14, but that may nonetheless be the reason why I don't have as many memories (as most people do) of my childhood. My family wasn't well-off by any means, but we had heat and hot water and dinner every day, so I have no complaints.
In the days before VCRs, maw had to make every effort to be home at 2pm to watch a soap opera (The Doctors). But I can remember spending a lot of time walking to the park and walking to the local stores, and walking the neighborhood at Christmas to look at the decorations. I think she was a rather active person. She didn't go to work until after my father died when I was 13, but she got right into it, and as far as I can remember, she enjoyed the experience.
The one thing that I never asked her was: Why did you always tell us to "look it up" when we asked how to spell something while doing homework? Ok, so maybe it worked, but it was a royal pain! I can still remember the whine.. But how can I look it up when I don't know how to spell it?
There were also some not-so-good times which really aren't important since I came to terms with that many years ago, so I choose to focus on the good things I can remember. I have no connection to the old neighborhood since we sold the family house in 1999, so I don't go down that way any more. I'd probably drop by the cemetery if I was closer, I haven't been there since the funeral, but on the other hand, it really doesn't make much difference... She's not there, she's here....
Happy Bday, Maw...
