Immunizations

Wow! I just had a 40 minute conversation with some people who believe the following:

  • Vaccines are NOT responsible for the eradication of the terrible infections that ravaged the nation before the mid 1950's. They believe better water and hygiene did the trick.

  • Vaccines are dangerous and are not subject to any unbiased testing or scrutiny.

  • Vaccines are full of dangerous chemicals and metals and unborn baby stem cells.

  • Vaccines are responsible for more deaths than they prevent.

  • There is a causal relationship between vaccination and incidence of autism.

  • Vaccines are not working.

  • Through virus shedding, my recently vaccinated toddler poses a greater threat to unvaccinated children than their unvaccinated children pose to other individuals.

  • The CDC and other vaccine promoting organizations, as well as medical professionals, stand to gain financially from the continued use of vaccines and, for that reason, are suppressing scientific research that would prove their ineffectiveness and dangers.

And there's more...
I politely listened and rebutted a few points and moved on. Although I'm open to learning more, I'm convinced that vaccines have saved millions of lives since they were introduced in the mid 1950's.
Is there a benefit to more independent studies and testing? Sure! Have there been vaccine-related deaths and injuries? Sure! But in my opinion, I'll take that chance confident in the fact that my immunized children are helping protect the rest of the population from diseases that at one time caused incredible pain, sorrow and suffering.

i am in favor of vaccines for most but i am one who refuses the flu vaccine. my mom, whose biology i mirror, always became very ill after getting a flu shot. when she stopped getting the shot, she didn't get ill anymore. i have been refusing for years, and have still not gotten the flu, so i'll stay with what works for me.

I had that same experience and won't get the flu shot again.

That people believe those bullet points is a failure of public education. Your last point is the most worrisome, when people don’t trust scientists who work directly against disease outbreaks. Distrust of the source makes things so much harder. So sad when it takes events like the Ohio outbreak of measles in that Amish community to change willingness to vaccinate.

I'm amazed at the steadfast commitment some people have to these unfounded claims.

And they believe the world is flat!

And doubt that we ever made it to the moon!

I am not even going to be open minded about this because I remember the
constant fear we had for our children before the polio vaccine came out.
These people who spout the anti vaccine rhetoric are being protected because our children have been vaccinated. I think they are totally nuts.

I know, right? And they deny the truth of herd immunity. We are firm believers in the modern miracle of vaccinations.
