Federal prosecutors have charged 111 people, including doctors, nurses and health care company officials, with bilking the Medicare system out of $225 million in the largest one-day health care fraud sweep in U.S. history, USA TODAY's Kevin Johnson reports.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says the charges filed in nine U.S. cities are part of a national crackdown on false billing schemes by health providers from New York to Los Angeles.
Holder says the suspects allegedly submitted claims to Medicare for treatments, including home health care, medical equipment, physical therapy and prescription drugs, that were "medically unnecessary and often never provided.''
Among the targets:
•In Brooklyn, N.Y., three doctors and one physical therapist were among 10 suspects charged in alleged frauds totaling $90 million, according to court documents.
•In Miami, 32 suspects, including two doctors and eight nurses, allegedly submitted false billings totaling $55 million.
•In Detroit, 21 suspects, including three doctors and three physical therapists, allegedly submitted false claims for more than $23 million for nerve conduction tests, psychotherapy, physical therapy and podiatry.
