Sign Language

image

I am not sure if many of you out there are hearing that more people are learning the sign language for the deaf.
They want to get involved and be part of the community.
I have the chart in my office and every day I try to learn as much as possible.
Not I am not perfect and probably will never be.
I take about five or ten minutes to learn this.
Able to say hello,Hi etc.For me I find this hard to learn as I feel my fingers are so butterfingers in doing son.
Just like learning your ABC when starting school.
Most hearing impaired will not take the time or try to learn this.
I only know one person who is deaf and do say hello or hi.
This person will give me a big smile.Make me feel good and I do want to get involve if I can.
Lot of the hearing people get annoy with impaired and deaf people.
Because they do not take the time in signing or speak slowly,
Ah!slowly they talk so fast and cannot make out what they saying.
When I asked to repeat and slowly, well I get sort of a evil eye.
Why is this? because they do not want to do it.
If I have a hard time hearing some people I let them know it.
A lot of voices are different.
You have an hearing aid and they holler at you.
This upset me and tell them that you do not holler or try to speak in my hearing aid.
How stupid is this?Dale of panthurdreams knows a lot about this and knowing what I am talking about.
Do you get upset by this?well you do not have to if you comply by the rules.
Take the time to speak slowly to your loved one or try to learn to sign.
This is a great tool.
Hope that Dale sees this and maybe put a light on this.
Oh!make sure you give them eye contact. Not looking down or up etc.

Just like learning the ABC.Get this out of the way and then learn the sign.
I look at my chart every day and spend about ten minutes. It does help.

I have a friend in his 80s who has lost most of his hearing and refused to learn Braile or how to sign. But he could read lips. What is so sad is that he is losing eyesight too. I do better with him when I lower my voice to a deep tone. And, of course, I remind whoever is around that you have to look right at him when you talk. The other thing I've done is set up extra lamps if he and his wife are having dinner with us, so he can see our faces. He is depressed about his loss of communication ability. Who can blame him.

Yes,it is sad. Some lips are hard to read. The men with the facial hair at the hardest.
Not sure if any on the woman have this(kidding)
I read lips most of the time. Some are hard and some are easy.Mike had a patient who was blind and deaf they communicate by writing on the palm of their hands. This is interesting.

I just watched the HBO documentary Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God about the bad priest at the school for the deaf children. The men who had been abused as children told their story in sign language with voice over, and I enjoyed seeing the signs with their meaning, especially because the subject matter wasn't the usual topics we would discuss with strangers or see on a newscast. For example, the ASL for s**t.

well love to have seen this.Just watching them in doing so.

Working in the deaf community you see all kinds of weird reactions to the whole hard of hearing/deaf thing. People will try to talk louder to make themselves heard...not always going to work...a lot of times it makes it worse. I use ASL in everyday life and find it invaluable and think everyone should learn. I use it snorkeling, hiking, at work, at home, when I want to secretly tell my honey something without others knowing, when I want to talk across the room...etc. People really just need to learn to enunciate, talk a tad slower & make sure to make eye contact!

as you know this is the hardest..They do not take the time and get frustrated in repeating. My feeling is that people do not take the time with t his.Slowly some are learning and we also have to tell them.

One of the nicest things about sign language is that it can be taught to non
verbal children. I have a very good friend who was able to do this in his
special education class.

...Yes,they can do this a lot and very helpful I am sure.
