Helping Others is Rewarding

There
is nothing quite so rewarding as helping a fellow human. I love those
moments when the other person tells me thanks for helping. Let me share
a story from yesterday.

My
work day began at 9:30. My friend Jake is off on Mondays. But as I
glanced up from my register I saw him walking through the store. He had
a new haircut. So I called over to him and said something like, Jake
your hair! Those 3 words were all I had time for as a customer was
headed my way. What I meant was that his haircut was great. A few
minutes later he was standing off to the side with the hood up on his
jacket. It was quiet at the moment so I told him to get over here. I
took his hood down and explained that his haircut is very nice but I
didn't have time to say all that. His beard was also trimmed. He
cleaned up well. Then I started thinking. Hmmm, what is the cause of
these changes? I got a big grin on my face and asked him what the
occasion was. You see in winter Jake does not shave or cut his hair. He
tends to look like a red headed wolf man. Totally out of character Jake
shylysays he has a date. Let me explain. Jake does not date much. Girls
see him as the big brother or the best friend but not as the boyfriend.
He is in his early 20s. To see Jake being shy was a shock. I thought to
myself this must be a very special young woman. So I started with the
questions, rattling them off without giving him time to answer. What's
her name, what does she look like, where did you meet her. Again shyly
he tells me I know her. He tells me her name, which does not ring any
bells with me. Then he says, the girl in the wheelchair with the dog.
Then I got a huge grin on my face. This young lady is amazing, and she
is hysterical! Yes she is in a wheelchair but don't ever make the
mistake of pitying her or trying to help her without her asking first.
I learned that the hard way when she came through my line one day. I am
not sure the cause of her being in a wheelchair but she exudes
personality. I had seen Jake talking to her frequently, laughing and
joking. He then tells mehe is nervous. I tried to tell him that any
girl would be lucky to date him. I told him, be yourself Jake. The look
on his face changed drastically. It was almost a look of horror. He
explained how he is so goofy at times. I laughed and said yes, but she
already knows that about you and STILL accepted a date with you. I told
him that his goofiness is part of his charm. We talked some more until
customers showed up. He later came through my line with a bag of
twizzlers for his date. He had called her and asked what her favorite
candy was. Jake is a very sweet young man, very polite and respectful.
I was so excited for him, almost like he is my little brother. I hope
they had a great time and that there will be more dates in their future.

All
day I thought of my talk with Jake. How he was so unlike his normal
self. Normally we are picking on each other, he gets crude to make me
laugh. He was a calm, reserved Jake, with his eyes downcast. He was not
the crazy wolf man being as goofy as me. His thoughts were about his
lacking skills in the dating environment and how no girl yet has seen
him as dateable material. The lucky lady who finally latches on to him
will be treated like a princess, spoiled with gifts and affection. And
if I can help my friend gain the confidence to find that woman, then I
accept the mission. I wish there were more men like Jake, who think of
women as magnificent, special creatures. A man who can not only be
silly and funny, but romantic and caring as well. He is a highly
intelligent young man who is not out for just sex. He wants the love of
his life. We talked one day about me and my husband. He toldme that's
like a once in a lifetime thing, me and my husband being soul mates. He
says it doesn't happen very often. I wish for Jake to have that once in
a lifetime love.
