It's such a beautiful day today. Temps in the 70's with a light breeze. I didn't go to work today...and no I didn't play hookie either. I had my leadership class today. We visited the local woman's shelter...and learned about all the services they offer. I've worked with women's shelters before so I'm always glad to visit and see what new things they are helping with. One of the coolest things our local shelter has done has been to open a retail clothing store. They have gotten donations from all over the county...and many local stores; and have opened a small shop where all the money they take in (after rent and utilities) goes back into the shelter to help women and children in getting back on their feet. The best thing about it is from week one they have made a profit and that is fantastic. Most of the things are gently used clothing, and some area stores have donated new items as well, it has turned out to be a fantastic thing for the community as well as the shelter.
After lunch we went back to where I work and got to visit with several other agencies in our conference room. We listened to the Red Cross director talk about services in our area as well as how they help with national disasters. We also heard from the Rescue Squad and what all services they offer. What really amazed me is all these guys work without any pay, it's all volunteer. The last speaker we heard was the head of the Wildlife & Forestry Dept. which was one of the highlights of the day. Some of the stories he told us had us laughing to the point of tears.
All in all it was a good day with lots of really good information. I recommend if you have a chance to learn more about the community you live or work in...do it...you'll learn a lot you didn't know.
Hope everyone has a great rest of the day...I think I'm gonna get off here and spend some time outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warm temps...
