William Faulkner Re-visited.

It has been a long time since I read any of his books but I
do intend to check some out Monday. I am reading a new
biography and it has aroused my interest. I am not sure just how you would classify his prose but I am thinking stream of consciousness.

The author has pointed out that he told many lies about
having a war record when in fact he was still in flight
school when the war ended. It seems that he went home in an
officers uniform with purloined wings pinned to his breast
and even carried a swagger stick. This struck me as hilariously funny but he was a complicated and very talented
man. He also added the letter u to his name. His parents
spelled it Falkner.

I always loved his use of dialog. I can remember people who
talked in the same way. The character of Benjy from the
Sound and the Fury was in my opinion a masterpiece. We see into his mind. He can't talk because Faulkner characterizes
him as being an idiot without speech.

There are things in his books that strike a chord in my
mind. He makes a big deal out of cornshuck mattresses and
how they rattle when you lie on them. I remember them as
belonging to some of the kids that I spent the night with.

This biography by Phillip Weinstein called "Becoming Faulkner" is a good read. Don't miss it, it will send you
to the library.
