As a child of the depression, I learned that more babies were not always a good idea. My mother was a strong proponent of birth control. I have said before on this blog that my sweet, extremely shy grandmother asked her
doctor for a method of birth control because she could hardly feed the three daughters she had. She realized that
it was better to limit her family and give those children she had a better quality of life.
I have seen women cry because of an unwanted pregnancy when
there were only back street abortions to be had. It is hard to welcome another child when you cannot feed and clothe the ones you have.
I remember when Lillian Carter joined the Peace Corp and went to India. She was so frustrated because these poor
men would not allow their wives to use birth control which
was within their means. It consisted of cotton soaked in
cooking oil and used as a suppository. I don't mean to be graphic but I wanted you to appreciate that it was within
economic reach.
Our population in the United States is increasing very rapidly and as I see it the Catholic Church and their
ban on birth control is to blame. They have such an unrealistic view of birth control and Latinos are a
rapidly growing segment of our society and mostly Catholic.
We have seen the result of too many people and not enough
space in other countries. It leads to poverty, disease,
ghettos and gang violence.
This is probably a politically in correct blog but something
sure needs to be done. I don't have any solutions but I am
very aware of the problem.
Just a cranky old lady here.
