The Cruise That Never Was

We boarded the Voyager in Galveston on Sunday. The fog was so thick the ship had to stay docked. On Monday we were hoping that it would clear..still pea soup. None of the
shopping or gambling was allowed so we all drank and peered
wistfully at all the duty free goods.

Passengers were getting more furious by the minute. The first and last days of a cruise are the pits because of the hassle of boarding and deboarding. A seven day cruise is in reality only five days of heaven. At six p.m. the Captain announced that we would be unable to reach Honduras and it
would be eliminated from the itenary. At seven p. m. he announced that if you wanted to get off the ship by eleven
p.m. you would recieve a free cruise on any Royal Carribean
Vessel at another time but if you stayed you took the chance
of the fog not lifting and there would be no other refunds.
There were a lot of obstacles to leaving. The cars were
all locked up in secure parking lots, there were endless lines
to clear the ship and you had to handle your own luggage.
We opted to go home. Ted stood in the clearance line while
I got an emergency number for the parking lot and packed.

Our room steward, from India was a pearl of great price. He
told me to worry about nothing, that he would take care of
me. Somehow he arranged for our luggage to be taken to the dock at the exact time our bus was to arrive. This was wonderful because it was formal night and people were swanning around the ships in furs and tuxes and the elevators were nigh impossible. Even with rolling luggage,
it would have been a nightmare.

He was a wonder. Previously our luggage had been lost
because we were upgraded and he searched till he found it.
He could work miracles and I would like to have taken him
home with me. The staff on this ship was the most helpful
and corteous of any ship that I have ever been on. Ted
needed an over the counter medicine that was not available and a sweet girl from the purser's office provided it from
her own quarters.

We had to stay in the nearest motel because the fog was to
thick to drive in. Tuesday evening we were home and had
our dog. I hope the people who elected to stay on the ship
finally got out to sea. The Captain was going to show movies all day Tuesday, as a treat. I think about half of us
left.

It is good to be home.
