It is so cold down here that yesterday the governor of Florida issued a state of emergency. We have thousands, probably millions of homes built without heat and those people are freezing! Sure, the newer homes have heat, but for decades houses down here were built without heating systems. Most of the older mobile homes don't have heat either. This places our most vulnerable populations at risk: the elderly and the poor with small children.
While it is not cold enough to kill most people, Florida agriculture is at serious risk. During the winter months so much of the produce found on YOUR grocery shelves comes from Florida that freezes like this will likely impact the prices of produce for several months. Some farmers have lost a lot while others suffered minimal damage. I think that depended upon the types of crops planted and the types of irrigation used. The ones that can produce a fine mist that allows a thin coating of ice to develop, protects a lot of crops from freezing. Needless to say, crops like lettuce can't handle even a thin sheet of ice.
Me- I am toasty warm in my house. Think while I am out today I will pick up a few logs for the fireplace.
