My "boss" is sick and I am unable to finish my newsletter, so I spent the time painting. The technique I used to paint this one is called a Grissaille. Basically, that is a monochromatic under painting that shows all of the shadows and highlights. Over this I painted the colors in thin glazes. The under painting took longer than the color tinting. One of the advantages of this technique is being able to see the errors in the under painting and fixing them in the color version.
Hope my department chief gets well soon. I want to finish the newsletter as I have another one to do.
BTW: I might as well post the black and white. It is not truly 'black' but a mixture of Prussian Blue and Raw Umber. (I don't think I own a tube of black oil paint.) Usually, I do under paintings in browns, but I wanted this to be cool as opposed to warm. Night light is cool, but the light from the lamp had to be warm. Strange combination of tones.
