Providence Waterfires take place on most Saturday nights throughout the summer and well into the early to mid-fall season. A good length of the river that runs through the city is dotted by log-holding "cages". This wood is set on fire and people flock to see these mini blazes. People line the walkways and walls on both sides of the river, as well as on the crossover bridges. Music fills the air and street performers entertain those strolling along. Nearby "alleys", actually short sections of streets in the immediate area, offer a variety of attractions, such as live jazz bands, food stands, and souvenir vendors. But, the main attraction is the Waterfire itself. Hundreds of people will find places to sit, just to gaze out at the fires while listening to the music. Some will actually take one of many boat rides that are available. Simply watching these boats, especially the gondola with it's gondolier, gliding along as they pass the fires can be enjoyable, too.
Edie and I try to attend at least one Waterfire a year. We succeeded again this year and, with any luck, we will be attending another one tonight. Although pictures never come out that good at these events, I have posted a few for you to see...
