Mother's Day

No, I have never been a mom. I do not know the wonders and worries of motherhood. However, I have cared for and have spent a lot of time with children whom I have loved deeply. Some have filled me with such great joy in spite of the worries they sometimes caused, and a few have brought me heartbreak. Yet, I love and cherish them all.

These experiences, in addition to those I now share with other children in my life, have helped to increase my understanding, appreciation, and respect for the role of being a mom. They have all helped to bring a deeper meaning to the relationship I have with my own mother and in understanding the value of relationships that she and others have with their mothers.

My mother is my truest and dearest friend. Her love has never been anything but unconditional. Regardless of all other things in life, she always had time for me and never even hinted that I was ever in the way, unwelcomed, too much trouble, or a disappointment. We have enjoyed shopping, dining out, traveling, going to the movies and shows, working on crafts, doing chores, walking, cooking, baking, and entertaining together over the years, yet I have done my share of putting her through hell and making things difficult at times, too, but her love and devotion never waivered.

Mom has been my backbone in many ways and she has taught me so many things in the best way I know how...by setting an example by her own words and actions. I learned that telling a lie is not only dishonest, but is also painful, inexcusable, harmful, and often irreversible. I learned that trust and respect have to be earned, and one of the best ways for earning them is to practice them. I also learned that it's okay to be myself and not let others or other things suppress or change who I really am. And, I thank Mom for instilling the values that make me the kind of person who doesn't discriminate, who resists passing judgement, who believes in dreams, and who appreciates all things in life, including life itself.

Today is Mother's Day. So, Mom, I want to wish you a Happy Mother's Day!
