I am about 3/4 way through the "Black Jack" movie "Year One". You know what, I don't even like giving movie reviews. The only times I do, is if they are "super great", or if they really "suck". Sadly, this movie "sucks"! I don't want you to waste your time.
Normally, "Jack Black" is "great". I so wanted to see this, but turned out to be a huge disappointment. I don't know if I can even struggle through the end of it.
HERE IS THE DESCRIPTION THE MOVIE SITE GAVE:
Jack Black and Michael Cera headline Harold Ramis' Biblical comedy about a pair of misfit hunter-gatherers who embark on a wild journey through the ancient world after being banished from their primitive village.
Quite simply, it's not "funny at all". I got no problem with "Religious Comedy", so don't think that. That has nothing to do with it. I like a good religious comedy as much as anyone. The only time I don't, is if they are trying to distort "Biblical facts", not to be funny to mis-lead people. This movie isn't trying to do that at all. You know the "intent" is clear. It's trying to be "funny", just it isn't.
HERE'S WHAT I DON'T LIKE:
1) For one, it is like a journey through "Biblical" times. If you don't know the "Bible" much, you won't get the jokes mostly. Makes it un-watchable for many. If you do know the Bible, you will understand where they "try" to make you laugh (and follow the plot). But you won't. Simply cause it isn't funny.
2) You could make this in your "garage". It has to be one of the most "low budget" movies I've ever seen from a "talented man (Jack Black).
3) Just the fact that such a "huge star" like Jack Black, is in crap like this makes me hurl.
I won't say there wasn't a "funny moment" or two. There was a couple, but they are "so few and far between".
To be fair to the producers of this. I read all the reviews. Some thought it was "great" and gave it a 9/10. Others gave it a very low rating of 0/10. I'd probably give it a "3/10". The only reason I'd go that high, is Jack Black has this personality you want to watch at times.
I'd say "don't waste your time". At least don't pay to see it in the theater or anything.
