Neighborhood Block Party

When my children were growing up, there was always a block party in the summer. Last weekend, some of the neighbors revived the old tradition. What fun! One neighbor has a rock band which played for several hours. Another neighbor and his children have a professional Hawaiian entertainment group. They played guitars, ukeleles, drums, shaker things and sang and danced two kinds of hulas. The hula with the swaying hips and hands is the Hawaiian hula. The hula with the shaking hips is the Tahitian hula. The girls did both and gave lessons. There was also a bouncy house for the kids. The police department sent a car and an officer who visited with the children. The fire department sent an ambulance for every one to go in. They also brought a huge firetruck with a ladder that they raised to the sky. Our tax dollars at work and great to see these things up close and personal. Our local Culver's restaurant came with their mobile kitchen to sell food and drinks and their wonderful frozen custard. Most of the village trustees dropped by. (The rock band drummer is a trustee.) The whole day was great-almost 75 people showed up, including former neighbors and some other people who heard the music and came to check it out. Everyone was welcome. This event was a far cry from our original parties which involved balloon toss, egg toss, and shoe kick games. Back then our subdivision was new, our suburban village had 11,000 people, and was growing by leaps and bounds. Now, 30 years later, there are 43,000 residents in the village, the farms around us are gone, the original children are grown, and my 9 year old grandson and I had a great day. Do you have any neighborhood traditions or remember any from the olden days?

Every August our neighbour has a family reunion/hootenanny. Fortunately, we're away on vacation then.

I hope to have a small private one around the holidays and I hear music coming from a corner house so I will certainly ask that family. They
practice a lot.

I hope your party turns out as well as ours did and you have good weather. So much weird stuff going on lately- fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods.

I've tried several times to start a tradition of "block parties", but no one has ever taken their turn. Thus, it fizzles. I'm envious.

I am not sure how you could have a block party living out in the country. Mighty big blocks there! Thanks for your comment.

Sounds like a wonderful time. The small 2000 population town I grew up in has its Berthoud Days, which is kind of like that, but not quite; you've got the personal touch of neighborhood-ness going on.

When we moved here, the village was surrounded by farms and had 8000 residents. No more farms, no more open space except for parks. 43,000 residents. We try to keep neighborhoods together.

Wow, that sounds like loads of fun. My neighborhood is an old established one (50 years and counting) and about 1/3 of the residents are original property owners so they are getting up in years. My neighbor across the street whom I adore is 92 and still drives to church and the grocery store. I am not sure they would like a block party although I would.

We have about 1/4th original owners, too-I am one. Our houses were built 43-44 years ago. We have owners now who grew up here. It is a good feeling that they want to live where they grew up and raise their children here. We think we did something right with a safe neighborhood and good schools. Thanks for your comment.

I lived in Long Beach, CA for 30 years. Our neighborhood was two residential and quiet streets that looped together in a "U" shape at one end. Every year we had a "cul-de-sac" party on a Sunday at the end where the two streets looped together. Neighbors (about 30 homes) brought barbecues, tables, chairs and lots of food. I did the BBQ thing one year with my huge smoker BBQ and cooked about 25 racks of prk ribs. A guy next to me was doing hamburgers, maybe 20 at a time. I recall there were about 10 BBQs going at once. Tubs full of soda, water, beer and wine. The city allowed us to cordon off the streets at the other end and sent one fire truck down so the kids could get in the cab and have their pics taken wearing a fireman's hat. Somebody paid for and set-up a rock band in the street, sound system included. It was a blast! I miss that togetherness.

These kinds of things make good memories, don't they? Thanks for your comments.
