False Alarm

At my fitness center this morning, right in the middle of my flexibility class, the fire alarms went off all over the building. The women in my class said What is that, Do we need to do something? I said, Yes, we need to get out; bring your towels. I have been through this twice before at the fitness center in the winter and it gets really cold waiting outside for the fire department to arrive when you are in exercise clothing and no coats so having a towel to wrap around you really helps. So out we all went and waited and fortunately it was a false alarm. I worked for a school district and we had fire drills all the time. When we went back in, I started remembering our fire drills and realized that we did nothing we were supposed to do. We didn't turn off the lights in the room or shut the door when we left. And the worst thing was that, instead of going outside directly through the exit door in the gym, we went back into the main part of the building, across the lobby, and then out the front door. We could have been walking right into the fire. Most of the people there had not been through a fire drill since they left school. They had no clue what to do. Everyone got out, including the children in the day care room who also went out the wrong door, coming through the lobby instead of using the door in their room. And a few people were in the hot tub and the pool and they didn't want to get out at all. They had no clothes at all, just towels. Brrrr. There wasn't any panic; everyone treated it like an adventure. A cold adventure. And fifteen minutes later we were back inside exercising like nothing had happened.

Reminds me of how much I hated fire drills at school. So disruptive (but necessary, I know). At least they tried to pick warm days.

In my office, we kind of looked forward to fire drills, but then, we weren't in a school with students.

Today I heard that there was one woman who refused to leave the locker room. She was in her underwear using a blow dryer and wouldn't leave even though the firemen were checking room to room. She said "Well, they will just get a show." Nuts, right?

That's why I don't exercise--you can get burnt!

Somehow I don't think that was what Jane Fonda meant when she used to say Feel the burn!

I guess that worked like a fire drill, so maybe next time things will go a little smoother.

I have feeling there will be meetings for staff to know what to do. As there should be. A staff person in each area should know and not rely on the members.

That is so weird. We had the same problem on Monday morning and the alarm went off as we all gather in the lobby. They had to wait for the fire dept to shut off the alarm.
What happen?they say it was a low water pressure there?then we all went back to our workout or game. There were not too many people there.Did not realized that this activated the alarm?

We do not know what caused out alarm yet. Maybe tomorrow we will find out.

At the very least, the adults in the day care room should know how to get the children outside by the nearest exit. Thank goodness it was a false alarm.

They stopped to put on their coats, too, which was good since it was cold, but if it had been a real fire, those few seconds could have been tragic.
