False Alarm
False Alarm
At my fitness center this morning, right in the middle of my flexibility class, the fire alarms went off all over the building. The women in my class said What is that, Do we need to do something? I said, Yes, we need to get out; bring your towels. I have been through this twice before at the fitness center in the winter and it gets really cold waiting outside for the fire department to arrive when you are in exercise clothing and no coats so having a towel to wrap around you really helps. So out we all went and waited and fortunately it was a false alarm. I worked for a school district and we had fire drills all the time. When we went back in, I started remembering our fire drills and realized that we did nothing we were supposed to do. We didn't turn off the lights in the room or shut the door when we left. And the worst thing was that, instead of going outside directly through the exit door in the gym, we went back into the main part of the building, across the lobby, and then out the front door. We could have been walking right into the fire. Most of the people there had not been through a fire drill since they left school. They had no clue what to do. Everyone got out, including the children in the day care room who also went out the wrong door, coming through the lobby instead of using the door in their room. And a few people were in the hot tub and the pool and they didn't want to get out at all. They had no clothes at all, just towels. Brrrr. There wasn't any panic; everyone treated it like an adventure. A cold adventure. And fifteen minutes later we were back inside exercising like nothing had happened.
