Earth Day
Last night I took my 10 year old grandson to a park district Earth Day program about insects. I am an environmentalist; he is not. I am trying to convert him. The program was presented by a naturalist who is the daughter of my friend Mary. Mary is a 4th grade teacher and we have line danced together for 20 years. Her daughter is a former teacher, writer, editor of textbooks and is called The Bug Lady. Theresa is a natural teacher/presenter/entertainer. She talked about what makes an insect, where they live, who eats them (not us so much), and how many insects and insect parts are allowed by our gov't to be in our food. LOTS! In pizza, flour, jelly, peanut butter, apple butter, pasta, and many more. Then there was a tasting for those who wished to participate. I did not. Grandson did. He ate chocolate covered meal worms and crickets (legs removed) and spicy baked meal worms (sort of like small Cheetos). This is a kid who does not like change or variety in foods. How brave of him. But he doesn't want his Mom to know. Are you an adventurous eater? Happy Earth Day to you.
