What a morning!!!!! The cow that has been in labor for a couple of days, now has a half grown calf on the ground. It took the veterinarian about 20-30 minutes to get that calf out of the cow. It is one big calf... weighing about 110 lbs. Our other calves usually weigh around 60 or 70 lbs. The vet said this calf was big enough to wean. Of course, he was kidding.
Lunarhunk wanted to know if the cow or calf were in danger. I told him, everyone was in danger. The cow would never have delivered this calf by herself and would have died along with the calf. And... getting that bitchy old cow in to the head catch was a danger to myself, my stepson, and the veterinarian. She wanted to eat us alive. I've never seen such snorting, mooing, and blowing snot all over the place... (I'm speaking of the cow.) lol
Now, we just hope the calf stands up and starts nursing and that mom lets it nurse. Sometimes when the birth is really traumatic, the cow rejects the calf. It is just waiting to see what happens now. Mom is also having troubles standing. Her back end is a little wobbly from having that large of a calf pulled. As long as she stays up and doesn't get down... she is okay.
Soooo... I'm leaving her alone for the next few hours to see what happens. As long as anyone is around, she won't pay attention to the calf.
I'll let ya know how it progresses.
