Keeping My Head Above Water

I sure have had a struggle keeping my head above water, lately.  Between pain and depression... I think I may be drowning.I did have an interesting trip to town yesterday.  I saw the physical therapist and he told me not to go back to the surgeon, but to see another back surgeon.  He said I definitely needed a second opinion.  But, he cautioned me not to tell my back surgeon what he said or he wouldn't get anymore physical therapy referrals from that surgeon.  I was complaining that my surgeon didn't listen and he said he had heard that complaint from alot of his patients.

Then I had another appointment with my regular doctor and he told me the same thing.  "We need a second opinion because your surgeon is not listening."
Like I said it was interesting.

So, now.... to find another doctor and one that will listen.  I think when I see a new doctor, my first question to him will be... "Do you listen?"

By-the-way... do any of you have suggestions on how to find a top notch back surgeon?  I sure could use some help here.

You know annie, I agree with the doctor. But it's definitely a quest to find someone who will LISTEN. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Oh no!! I am so sorry Annie. There is nothing worse than being in pain and having to go doctor shopping. Ugh!! I sure do feel for you. My hubby had a different doctor after his first back surgery. The second doctor for the next two back surgeries he had was a neurosurgeon which did make a difference. He still has trouble and pain, but it is better than it was. Maybe you need to find a neurosurgeon. I wish you the best and will keep you and the family in my prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are struggling. I think it's a good idea to check out local doctors via the internet. You might also check your yellow pages and call their office with a list of questions. I've learned one important factor in searching for a good doctor...if you call and the receptionist is pleasant and listens, chances are the doctor is the same way. I've had to see many doctors because of my auto immune disorder and that was how I found my doctors. I have really great doctors and their receptionists and nurses are also very nice and friendly. I hope that helps. In the meantime, please take it easy with your back.

I'd start on the net for some local referrals...best of luck!

I've always thought that word of mouth was a good way to find about good doctors, but that's easier said than done, esp. in a small community where there aren't a lot of doctors from which to choose. Since we've moved from a good sized city to a tiny town, I find the situation frustrating. My doggie just had back surgery from a vet who did a great job, but I don't think you want the vet... I sure hope your back gets better soon.

I've always found it more helpful to ask other people about providers. The doc I've been seeing for the past 5 years (since I moved to Delhi)is leaving town. He gave me his perspective on his colleagues, but asked what I had heard in the community about them (not much, most guys I know go to the VA). I also live in a rural area, and specialists come to the local hospital once or twice per month, although it doesn't seem like you have that where you are.

I am sorry that you are having such difficulties with your back. It must be so frustrating.
Have you tried DocFinder (https://www.docboard.org/docfinder.html). Click on your state, and you can do a search for doctors by name and specialty. It gives you a chance to see if there have been any official complaints filed against them.

First thing you want to ask "are you board certified?" You also want to know if they've ever had any infections. If so... BOLT!!! If you know of other people who have had back surgery, ask them. Good luck.

P.S. I notice you have a link to Romanian Children on your site. Curious, since, I'm Romanian.
