Apple Season

As I have mentioned before... fall is my favorite season. I love the crisp mornings and the mixture of scents in the air. Also, it is the time of year for my favorite fruit.... apples!!!!! I just can't get enough of them this time of year. I even love going to the produce department just to gaze over the many varieties and to take in the aroma.

Not only does an "apple a day keep the doctor away"... but apples can be turned into applesauce, apple pie, apple cake, baked apples, etc., etc. Best of all... is that winning combination of aroma and flavor that comes from a steaming hot cup of apple cider loaded with cinnamon and other spices.

Please excuse me while a brew a mug.

I can remember many a cool night back at Bates College in Lewiston Maine when visiting one of our profs we would be served a hot cup of apple cider and a frest made donut. Talk about goooood!,

Nothing more American than apple pie. Mmmmmmmmmmm...pie. My parents used to make the best pie using apples from their neighbor's tree. He called them Jonadells (A red delicious/Jonathan hybrid.) They made awesome apple pies and crisps. The neighbor died and his sister lives there. She asked my dad to cut down the tree because it's diseased. No more delicious pies. My Dad is now using the wood to barbeque with and for mulch. The tree will flavor steaks and burgers instead of pies.

We have 2 old apple trees here. I sprayed them during the summer, and although they don't produce much, we have enough apples for 4 pies so far! Happy Fall! It's Donna's favorite season too.

I can't count the number of times that I bobbed for apples and ate a carameled apple on a stick---Oh Fall!

My ex-husband and I lived in Oregon for almost a year and the house we were renting had an apple tree in the backyard. I learned how to can from my mother-in-law and made applesauce. However, that was almost 16 years ago and I have since forgotten how to can fruits.
