New Yarn

This is a hat I just made from Ironstone Yarn Color Changes wool/acrylic, made in Italy. For some reason (maybe the acrylic) it was super-cheap, $3,90 a ball, on the Internet so I bought a great large quantity. It was supposed to be bulky weight, but it's actually a worsted weight, and has a very soft feel when knitted up. I am using to make hats for a charity hat project.

It's also a little looser twist than I'm used to, so at my skill level, in order to keep from splitting the yarn as I knit, I'm sticking to simple patterns.

The variegated design is very random - no two balls are the same, and the colors do not repeat in an orderly fashion, making it difficult to control the pattern repeats as one might sometimes want to do for gloves or sweater sleeves or even some scarves. But it's great for quick hats. The other color changes are more subtle in the other colors I bought, so the patterning is not as obvious.

Here's my Brown Sheep Yarn Co. order that came in on Wednesday. I ordered different product lines and weights than last year, and am looking forward to working with them.

The hats are lovely and will keep a lot of people warm. They are more
practical than scarves because you lose so much heat from your head. Do
you have any plans for matching mittens?

No mittens, maybe next year's charity project. One problem with that particular yarn is the color changes are so random, it's impossible to get the cuffs of the mittens to start at the same color and proceed in a matching manner. It doesn't have to be exact, but you don't want to glimpse your wrists in peripheral vision being all psychedelic and mis-matchy like a cheap plaid skirt. This will also be a problem for the sleeves of a sweater, but the other colors of that yarn are darker, so it might not be so noticeable. Fine for hats, though. Hugs to you there, dearie, I'm grinding some coffee beans this morning, let's sit on the porch and have a cup.

Very impressive.

I have anxiety about all this yarn and having to learn new techniques and ... and ... Don't worry, I'll recover when I get it put away so it's not right here in front of me.

I liked the hat.Are you selling these?
comment by fredo on July 15, 2011 2:24 PM ()
I don't knit well enough to sell my work, they are for a charity project - 200 some hats, our choice of colors, patterns, and sizes - to be done by Christmas. Last year we made scarves.

Pretty colours on that hat.
Impressive beginnings of a stash. Do you expect to use it up by the time you place next year's order? Have you checked out https://www.ravelry.com/ yet?

It will be a miracle if I use it up in a year, but I hope I can make a lot of progress. In fact, it's very intimidating to look at this huge box with the yarn bursting out of it because I haven't cleared out that much storage space. I've been browsing through Ravelry, and downloaded some patterns I really like. I still have to finish the mohair hand-paint sweater I was working on until a month or so ago - I needed this order because I'd run out of that yarn. It's been so long I've forgotten what I was doing, and hope I can understand my notes, if I can find my notes. Hah!
